THE FUNCTIONAL ROLE OF 6 DODGE RAM CUMMINS EMISSIONS COMPONENTS
IN REDUCING NOx IN DIESEL ENGINE EXHAUST
SCHEDULE SERVICEA systematic design which incorporates the functional roles of 6 emissions components gives the RAM Cummins diesel engine incredible efficiencies in reducing the release of environmental pollutants via engine exhaust while simultaneously delivering substantial power to the drivetrain and maintaining high fuel efficiencies. These six emissions components work in unison, dependently and interdependently, treating the diesel engine’s exhaust gases to prepare it for the treatment which the next, downstream, component will apply to it with the eventual result being exhaust at the tailpipe which is nearly 100% free of nitrogen oxides.

EGR (EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION) VALVE
NOx forms when extreme temperatures are reached in the diesel engine combustion chamber. The EGR valve controls the formation of NOx (nitrogen oxides) by displacing a portion of the oxygen and reducing the temperature in the combustion chamber by introducing inert gases into it.
EGR COOLER
The EGR cooler increases the EGR efficiency at producing lower NOx formation by reducing the EGR gas temperature.
EGR BYPASS VALVE
The EGR Bypass valve assists in warming the combustion chamber and the DOC in their operation during cold starts.
DIESEL OXIDATION CATALYST (DOC)
The DOC converts hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) into carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). The NOx is not removed, but it is oxidized to NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) for further processing by the DPF and the SCR.
DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER (DPF)
The DPF is a porous filter which traps particulate (PM) matter, commonly known as soot. The diesel particulate filter is up to 90% efficient at removing PM from tailpipe emissions. As the particulate matter is removed and builds up in the filter, it triggers a regeneration event to burn off the collected soot. The regeneration event successfully burns off the collected particulate matter by elevating the temperature of the exhaust gasses to above 1022 degrees.
SELECTIVE CATALYST REDUCTION (SCR)
The function of the SCR is to reduce NOx into nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide and water. This is done in conjunction with the injection of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) into the SCR. Diesel exhaust fluid is a special aqueous solution of ultra-purified urea (ammonia), at 32.5%, and deionized water at 67.5%, a carrying agent for ammonia (NH3) which is the component used in NOx reduction.
